Campus Tours
Project Overview
There aren’t many people that could contend with having more pride in this university than I do. As a high school senior, nobody encouraged me to take a tour of any campuses that I had applied to. Luckily, something still pulled me to Southern Utah University and I’m grateful every day that this is what I chose. It’s so important to me to showcase this university to those students who may be in that position of choosing where they want to spend their next four years. That’s my purpose of taking on this responsibility. Not to reach my graduation goals, but to help others meet theirs. Campus tours are the lifeblood of recruitment. Out of all the students who take a tour here at SUU, 71% of them end up choosing this university. The campus tour is a critical one-hour time slot that should show these students how incredible we are. That is where I come in. This project involves creating a campus tour system that is functional, efficient and most of all exceptional. This means creating a very quick and easy to use form for prospective students to fill out. This also involves many surveys and research finding what prospective students want to see while at SUU as well. Then, implementing that into our tours. This means working with professors to create visiting hours, as well as collaborating with financial aid and many other organizations around campus. Another factor that goes into this project is training all 55 of the tour guides. Training included presentations, sample tours, and department visits. The end also included creating a written tour assessment and a way to assess actual tour giving around campus.

This is unique in that it involves higher education. It also provides a leadership position in which I’m directly over the 55 tour guides and also catering to another outside group. Many students in my major may choose something such as tutoring which is so common to see on resumes. The great thing about my EDGE project is that it is something outside of the classroom to add onto my experience I’ve already had inside the classroom.
